Fighting Poverty By Doing More with Less

Father Godfrey was in California teaching during the beginning of the 1980's famine in Africa. Hundreds of thousands of his compatriots were literally starving to death. He knew he had to go back.

When he arrived, what he found was a "logic of poverty." But he also saw opportunities. His expertise as an agriculturalist, coupled with his unique ability to inspire and motivate, became the impetus for a revolutionary way of creating and sustaining wealth in Benin's most impoverished regions. He founded the Songhai Centre in 1985, with the aim of training all willing to learn how to profitably grow food crops, without harming the earth which yields them.

Now there are 13 Songhai Centres in four African nations, each of them equipping agricultural entrepreneurs with the tools and training necessary to transform their own lives, and the lives of their communities. Now that's heroic.
